CAPPE - Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics

The Master of Arts (Professional and Applied Ethics) will be co-ordinated by staff in the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE). The Centre is a partnership between:

• The Australian National University
• Charles Sturt University
• The University of Melbourne.

The purpose of CAPPE is to conduct ground-breaking research, to provide policy input and to promote community discussion and professional dialogue in relation to important and pressing matters of public and political concern. CAPPE is an Australian Research Council funded centre and constitutes the largest concentration of philosophers working on applied philosophy and public ethics in the world.

The Centre's research is organised around six integrated research areas. These research areas are:

• criminal justice ethics
• business and professional ethics
• ethical issues in biotechnology
• IT and nanotechnology: Ethics of emergent technology
• ethical issues in political violence and state sovereignty
• welfare ethics.

Specific research projects include:

• cloning; nanotechnology and human enhancement
• dual use dilemmas
• ethics and infectious diseases
• identity management
• evil on-line
• anti-corruption systems
• incentivising pharmaceutical research in poverty related diseases
• military ethics
• regulation and the professions
• terrorism and torture
• ethics of humanitarian armed intervention
• service provision to the mentally ill
• confidentiality in the treatment of drug users.
